President Obama

The gay jokes of the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Usually, I prefer to stay clear of gay jokes. However, sometimes humour is a legitimate method of highlighting difficult issues in a very effective way. Especially, when the intention of the person who delivers it is beyond reproach.

Satire, after all, is just the truth delivered … fast.

Upon reading the transcript of President Obama’s speech at the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, I laughed out many times, but the two ‘gay jokes’ the President cracked were particularly hilarious and poignant, especially if you are familiar with Republican attitudes towards marriage equality, and gays generally, and the Memories Pizza incident in Indiana:

You know what, let me set the record straight. I tease Joe sometimes, but he has been at my side for seven years now. I love that man.

He’s not just a great Vice President, he is a great friend. We’ve gotten so close, in some places in Indiana, they won’t serve us pizza anymore.

Meanwhile, Rick Santorum announced that he would not attend the same-sex wedding of a friend or a loved one. To which gays and lesbians across the country responded, that’s not going to be a problem. Don’t sweat that one.

And then, to top it all, President Obama brought out his anger translator …

At least, if Michele Bachmann’s prediction proves correct (and after all, there is a first time for everything), and President Obama does ‘bring about the biblical end of days’, we are going out laughing.
